INDIGENOUS PEOPLES RIGHTS IN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT
Globalization, can also be accepted as global development, refers to the cross-border movements of goods, money, information, ideas, and people, and the concomitant interdependency of people and institutions around the world. This interconnectedness, and the changes it brings in living conditions and perspectives, creates both opportunities and challenges.
Formerly, globalization is objected to ease the obstacles of sharing information and other sectors among people of different countries to lessen the gap of development. But as it progress, what happen in reality is vice versa.
Globalization which should be a new force to help the poor and developing country by creating a bigger opportunity is now being the invasive energy of a greater malignant power. The border that previously used as the protecting barrier of a small country is now vanished, and unfortunately, it gives greater opportunity for the developed country to flourish and invade. This invasion really gives problem to the rights of people in lesser power country, including the indigenous peoples rights or also can be called the First Nations.
Based on the United Nations, there are over 370 million indigenous peoples around the globe and they are facing almost the same problems in the dynamic global development such as, 1) exploitation of their resources; 2) discrimination of their rights; 3) marginalization of their community; 4) lackness of self-determination (such as in education and health); and, 5) conflict of faith and religion between modernised peoples and indigenous peoples. It means there are 5.5% – 6% of human in this planet is still facing the problems as they were in prehistoric era.
The effort to help them get their rights face a really big challenges. The discussion of the declarations of rights for indigenous peoples has taken 22 years and is still being confronted by super power countries like the United States, Australia and Canada. They successfully bring this effort to a point of stagnancy. It gives us some proves that there are bigger interests from developed countries in this global development. The worst thing is those interests neglect the human rights of indigenous people. Nevertheless, instead of making globalization as an opportunity to make a better world, they made it as a tool to expand their interests.
Those problems need a global understanding and a great bonding from other countries to push these super powers to admit that the rights of indigenous peoples are just the same as the human rights and need urgent solution. The power of every aspects in humanity like the media and the young people is really needed in this matter.
The empowerment of the rapid share of information between the young people worldwide through the global media will help increasing the global understanding of this problem. This proposal can be a very good investment in the effort of giving the rights to the indigenous people because these young peoples are the assets of the future, the next generation leader that hopefully can bring a fresh atmosphere to a trully global development and human rights. If this can happen they will bring globalization to the next level, to be the solution for the development of the rights of indigenous peoples. Making the better world for all the mankind.
